Kuptsova comes ever so close to clearing 2,05

High jump competition, which has traditionally been reserved for men at the Moscow Cup, was enhanced by a women`s contest this year - a welcome addition
that nearly led to a new Russian National record.
En route, Marina Kuptsova made all of the heights but one (1,92 mark,
which she needed two tries for) on her first attempt - 1,85, 1,89, 1,95, and, finally, 1,97, the Rubicon that left her all alone in the sector, as no other jumper managed a clearance at that height.
Meanwhile, there was certain weariness about the way that National record holder Anna Chicherova performed, as she slipped up twice at 1,89 and then used all three attempts again to make 1,95. After her first failed try at 1,97, Chicherova decided to retire from the competition, with the upcoming World Indoors on her mind.
Svetlana Lapina followed in Chicherova`s footsteps, missing 1,89 and 1,95 twice each, then leaving the sector after two unsuccessful attempts at 1,97.
Chicherova and Lapina ended up tied for second.
Tete-a-tete with the bar, Kuptsova requested that it be moved up to 2,05, 1 cm over Chicherova`s current National record.
The drama of the one woman show toyed with culminating in a story-perfect third attempt clearance before the bar tumbled down after a second`s hesitation...
