2nd day Znamenskiy Memorial

Yulia Nosova-Pechyonkina - 53,10

Edmonton Silver medalist Yulia Nosova-Pechyonkina had a brilliant showing in her 400 m hurdles race on the second day of the Znamenskiy Memorial. Setting a dazzling PR of 53,10 in her first race of the season, Yulia stormed into the 10th spot on the World all-time list for this event, while also becoming the third fastest Russian hurdler ever, behind National record holder Marina Stepanova (52,94) and Olympic Champion Irina Privalova (53,02).

Marina Kuptsova soars high again

Marina Kuptsova came to Tula straight from her training camp in Greece and proved that her 1,90 performance at the end of May, which, as was later dicovered, came in the middle of a strenuous workout schedule, was not a good indication of her true shape. Marina’s jumping was excellent today, as she cleared the first six heights, including 1,95, on her first attempts. She then proceeded to clear 1,97 on her second attempt and 1,99 on her third one. Yelena Slesarenko (nee Sivushenko) never allowed the leader to relax. She was right on Marina’s heels throughout the competition and set a new PR with a third-attempt clearance at 1,97.

Powerful opener for Sadova

Discus World Champion Natalya Sadova enjoyed a successful first meet of the season at the Znamenskiy Memorial. In her inital attempt, Natalya threw the discus 67,73 meters – the best performance in the World so far this year. She then forwent the ensuing four attempts. Yelena Antonova of Ukraine took second with a toss of 63,29.

Kuzenkova is plagued by second-place showings

Olga Kuzenkova, Russia’s premier hammer thrower, was out of luck again. She grabbed the lead on her second attempt with a throw of 66.29, only to have the performance bettered by Manuela Montebrun of France, who produced a 66,45. The story repeated in the very next attmept – Olga took the lead with a 65,61 toss, and the French responded with a far 68,41. Finally, as it appeared that Kuzenkova sealed the victory in the fourth attempt with a spectacular 68,73 throw, she decided to retire from competition, only to watch Montebrun’s perseverence steal victory for the French woman on a 68,98 closer.
