Danil Burkenya opens the season with an 8,12 leap

Danil Burkenya produced the most impressive performance of the first day of the Moscow “Season Opener” meet by winning men’s long jump in 8,12. This effort came as a result of intense competition between Burkenya and Vladimir Malyavin, who leapt past 8 meters – 8,05 - to take the lead briefly after the second attempt. Burkenya only managed a 7,80 on his first attempt, then fouled twice before taking the lead with a fourth-round jump of 8,07 and closing with an 8,12 effort. At the end of the day, it was twice as nice for Danila’s coach Yevgeniy Ter-Ovanesov, who was awarded the “Meritorious Coach of Russia” title.

There was no news in the weather department, as traditional rain and low temperatures descended on the Russian capital to welcome the athletes. That did not help the latter, to say the least. In women’s 1500 m, Yulia Kosenkova needed a 47,06 effort over the last 300 m to drop Olga Nelyubova. On the men’s side, Andrey Zadorozhniy made his move with a lap to go. Covering the first curve in a blistering 12,89, he broke away from the defending National Steeplechase Champion Roman Usov and was able to maintain the gap until the finish. Zadorozhniy’s victory came on the strength of a 53,5 last lap.
