Home favorites victorious twice

Volgograd natives claimed two gold medals at the Russian National Championships. Yelena Sivushenko, who just recently graduated from junior ranks, cleared a PR height of 1,96 in taking the women’s high jump title. Her credits from last year include clearing 1,94 and finishing fourth at the Eruopean Junior Championships. Today, Marina managed to topple all of the country’s best high jumpers, with the exception of Marina Kupstsova, who was exempt from competing in Volgograd. Vitaliy Shkurlatov felt right at home in the men’s long jump, leaping 8,08 to claim the lead from Kirill Sosunov, who ended up in second place with an effort of 8,01. Kirill, who has finally been able to shake off a series of injuries, now too has a link to Volgograd, by way of his coach Vyacheslav Dogonkin, known as the man who led Tatyana Lebedeva to a World triple jump title.
