Shkurlatov leaps 8,15 m!

The first day of competition at the forum, which combined three different
events--National Military and Trade Unions championships, as well as Moscow
city U23 competition--under the roof of the Kuts indoor track, was dominated
by long jumpers and one lap runners. An inspired performance came from
Vitaliy Shkurlatov, who went over 8 meters in each of his successful
attempts: 8,09, 8,00, 8,15, foul and 8,13. He had to pass up his last
attempt to be able to run a relay leg.

While Vitaliy held off his competitors handily, womens contest in this
event turned out to be a close one indeed. Irina Simagina of Ryazan, who
only recently competed as a junior, edged the experienced Olga Rublyova and
the 1997 World Champion Lyudmila Galkina by 1 cm and 5 cm respectively. In womens 400 m, World Championship contestant Natalya Antyukh ran a PR of 51,70 to become the world leader in the event. On the mens side, Alekandr Usov equalled the world leading time of 46,88 run earlier in the season by Bastian Swillims of Germany.

Runners in the mens 5000 m eyed special bonuses of 10
000-5000-4000-3000-2000-1000 roubles offered to the top six finishers by
Atletika-Alyans company. There were also bonuses for covering the distance
in under 14 minutes, and in under 13.45. In addition, each and every
competitor breaking the 14 minute barrier was entitled to an extra bonus of
3000 roubles. Unfortunately, whether due to the athletes lack of courage,
or to the bonuses too small in their opinion, the pace was extremely slow.
This ubdoubtedly benefited the fastest finisher of the pack, Sergei Drygin,
who prevailed at the finish line in a mediocre time of 14.16,19.

The outcome of the mens 1500 m was rather unexpected, as Andrei Olshanskiy, a young steepler coached by Yuriy Kukanov, stole the victory with a finishing spurt over the last 400 m. Left in the dust was Dmitriy Bogdanov,
whose PRs of 46,57 in the 400 m and 1.45,76 in the 800 m seem well out of
Olshankiys realm. However, the slow tempo allowed the steeple specialist,
who barely broke 3.50 outdoors, to use his kick wisely and win in 3.54,76.
